Liptov

Liptov covers an area of more than 2000 square kilometres. Business and culture centres of the area are Ružomberok, Liptovský Mikuláš a Liptovský Hrádok. Nearly half the area is covered by woods. Many mineral waters and mineral springs rise here – especially in Ružomberok, Liptovský Mikuláš a Liptovský Hrádok. Region is also known for its medicinal baths.

The Liptov area has rich cultural heritage and is typical of specific folk architecture and folklore. Liptov is surrouded by the highest mountains in Slovakia – The High Tatra, The West Tatra and The Chočské vrchy in the north, The Low Tatra in the south, The Velká Fatra in the west and The Popradská kotlina in the east. The river Váh flows through Liptov in its length of 43.5 km and so does its tributary Belá. We can find a famous dam Liptovská Mara there. Besides skiing and tourism this region offers less traditional sports such as paragliding, rafting, horse riding, caving, sightseeing flights, climbing, biking, gamekeeping, fishing. Thermal baths in Benešové and Liptovský Ján are famous. In winter Demänovská dolina, Maliné, Jasná, Chopok, Bocká dolina, Jánska dolina winter centres are frequented. The three most beautiful caves in Slovakia open to the public can be found in Liptov.
